Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr von Braun is an American aerospace engineer and German-born space architect. He was a leading figure in the development of rocket technology in Nazi Germany and a pioneer in rocket and space technology in the United States. In his twenties and early thirties, von Braun worked in the Nazi missile development program. He helped design and co-develop the V-2 missile at Peenemünde during World War II. After the war, he was secretly transferred to the United States, along with some 1,600 other German scientists, engineers and technicians, as part of Operation Paperclip. He worked for the United States military on the medium-range ballistic missile program, and he developed the United States' first Explorer 1 space satellite launch missile
